+++The offset for our project is the tradition of performative
storytelling on the Phad, a large scale
cloth painting on which scenes for an epic ballad are sequentially
highlighted with an oil lamp in the progression of the story being told. REVELATION AND SEQUENTIALITY +++TThe process of working with light as a device to reveal imagery can be related
to the series of frames of the moving film, as also to one of its
predecessors - the Laterna Magica. The sequential revelation of imagery that add
up to a narrative, includes the Indian Kaavad,
a crafted assembly of wooden panels set on hinges, which serves a similar
function as the Phad. In the Kaavad, the storyteller opens and closes the wooden
panels on their hinges for the sequential unfolding and revealing of new
scenes through imagery painted on the wooden panels. Another medium of
storytelling where the story unfolds through a series of images in panels is
that of the comic book. PROJECTION AND
SHAPING +++Working with the logic of sequential revelation of shapes with focus
on the performative act involved in the revealing
of the imagery, we crafted a frame that allowed the dynamic opening and
closing of panels revealing shapes and occluded objects on the overhead
projector. We choose to work with the overhead projector as it allows for a performative and spatial revelation of the space between
the object in the spotlight and the projected shadow of the object. LOOPS THAT COMPOSE +++A sound concept has been developed where prepared cassette-tape loops
are with real-time recordings of the sounding objects on the overhead
projector. |
